What company were you an intern at and how did you find out about it?
I did my internship with Lambent Productions, a documentary production company based on Steine. I found out about the internship through the BIP website, and then read up on the company itself by visiting their website and watching their showreels.
What were the reasons you went for an internship?
I went for an internship because I knew I wanted to be a Researcher in the broadcast sector, but I knew how fiendishly difficult it was to get work in that area – especially with little previous experience. I also admired Lambent Productions commitment to tackling provocative social issues.
What were your duties and what experience did you take away with you?
I was a Junior Researcher, which meant I had to explore the feasibility of ideas in their infancy. This included a lot of internet research and a lot of emails and phone calls. This was done in order to find both information and interesting characters willing to tell their stories on camera. During my internship I gained a huge amount of knowledge. I learnt how to write effective pitches destined for large broadcasting companies, how to operate cameras and rig lighting and how to use editing software.
What did the internship lead on to afterwards?
I have stayed in touch with Lambent Productions, who have been very supportive. I still am yet to have any success finding a job in broadcasting, but companies are looking at my CV with interest.
Would you recommend an internship to others?
Absolutely. This programme without a doubt offers young people and graduates the best opportunity for getting a foothold in an industry which can often seem very closed-off.
